Why Your Website Needs to Be Mobile Friendly

There are over a billion websites throughout the internet. And small, medium, and large businesses are using the internet to market their business online.

You simply cannot deny that internet marketing has taken the world by storm and that it has changed marketing as we know it.

But with all these businesses that are utilizing internet marketing, one thing that is very important to a business having online success is having a mobile friendly website.

Now you might be asking: “What does mobile friendly mean?” Well not to worry, because this article will tell you everything you need to know about your site being mobile friendly, and how key it is for your business.

Plenty of Mobile Users

Graph

A number of mobile users online is huge (millions) and there are more mobile users using the internet than desktop users.  As you can see, there is a great market for mobile marketing.

And if your site is mobile friendly, you can probably already see how this is a great benefit for your business/brand.

And even though a number of mobile users surfing the web is big now, mobile usage is growing bigger every year, thus increasing the market for mobile marketing.

Big, medium, and small business are already using mobile marketing and have mobile friendly websites to cater to mobile users, so implementing this marketing strategy into your business is crucial.

User Experience for Mobile Users

Now if you are a mobile user, then you’ve most likely gone into websites that are not optimized for mobile use. When a website isn’t mobile friendly, the mobile user’s experience on the website is poor because:

  • The website is slow to load on the mobile device (eg. large images).
  • The page is not formatted for mobile use, which makes it hard to navigate.
  • It’s hard to read and browse the web page (eg. text to small to read).

As you can see, this isn’t a pleasant experience. And if the person does not enjoy browsing your website what do you think they will do? Yes, they will leave your website and go elsewhere (which I’m pretty sure you don’t want).

However if your website was mobile friendly, then these issues would not occur and your potential customer would enjoy browsing your website.

Increased SEO

Now this is where Google comes in. Google encourages sites to be mobile friendly (because they offer better user experience for mobile devices) and with this comes a benefit which is: SEO.

When your site is mobile friendly, it will improve your website’s SEO (Search Engine Optimization), in turn allowing you site to rank higher on Google and other search engines. Improved SEO will allow more online users to see your website when they search for keywords that are relevant to your website.

You’ve Got Competition

Business Competion

With a business, you will almost always have competition. So say if your website wasn’t mobile friendly but your competition was, then your competitors will have the upper hand because they are offering a greater user experience for people using a mobile device.

Of course, this isn’t what you would want, so investing in mobile marketing and having a mobile friendly site is what you need when it comes to marketing your business online.

So you know that your website has to be mobile friendly, but how do you know if it is mobile friendly or not?

Not to worry, this is the process to test if your site is mobile friendly.

Google Developers Mobile-Friendly Test – This tool by Google will analyze your website and will tell you if your website is or isn’t mobile friendly.

  1. Hi Benjamin! Great article. Rechecked my website and still mobile friendly 🙂 For business websites that are several years old and haven’t been updated or are not tied to a mobile-friendly backbone, they can be losing customers who just click away as you indicated. Definitely recommend people check out their site – the check is very quick and you’ll know if your site is mobile friendly. Here’s a similar article I did a while back that covers a few other aspects if you’re on the fence. http://www.mikemcritchie.com/is-your-small-business-website-slamming-the-door-on-your-customers/
You need to know though (unless your website isn’t critical to your business…but in that case you’re probably living in a cave somewhere).

  5. Hi Benjamin,

Oh yes, we need to be mobile friendly! All us bloggers. During my world travels I see folks glued to mobile. Right or wrong, it happens everywhere now. Here in Nicaragua it seems all folks and their brothers – and sisters – head to the town square at night to go mobile. Eerie almost, the silence and growing screens all over in the dark, but it’s the way of the future. Fab points my friend.

    • Thanks Ryan. It’s mind blowing how much people are using their smartphones to browse the web nowadays. I mean, almost anyone I know has a smartphone and guess what? They are surfing the web with it everywhere they go. The thing I love about smartphones is you go to a lot of places and get internet access (wifi). Smartphones are so convenient and that’s why mobile marketing is taking over.

Thanks so much for the comment Ryan. 🙂
